A quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides and 4 vertices. A Quadrilateral can be of different types such as square, rectangle, trapezium, parallelogram, rhombus, kite etc.

**Definition of Rectangle**

A rectangle is a quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel and equal and all interior angles are right angles.

The diagonals in a rectangle are congruent and they bisect each other.

**Perimeter of a rectangle**

The perimeter is defined as the distance around a two dimensional shape. For a polygon, the perimeter is equal to the sum of the sides of the polygon. Since the opposite sides in a rectangle are of equal length, the perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula

Perimeter = 2 (l + b)

Where l is the length of the rectangle and b is the breadth of the rectangle. Sometimes this is also referred to as the width and the height of the rectangle.

Question: Calculate the perimeter of a rectangle with length equal to 6 cms and breadth equal to 2 cms.

( Answer: Length of the rectangle l = 6 cms

Breadth of the rectangle b = 2 cms

Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 * ( 6 + 2 )

= 2 * 8

= 16 cms

Question: Calculate the perimeter of a rectangle with length equal to 5 cms and breadth equal to 3 cms.

( Answer: Length of the rectangle l = 5 cms

Breadth of the rectangle b = 3 cms

Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 * ( 5 + 3 )

= 2 * 8

= 16 cms

**Area of the rectangle**

The area of a rectangle is given by the formula

Area = l * b

Where l is the length of the rectangle and b is the breadth of the rectangle.

The area of the rectangle is measured in sq cms.

**Practice questions:**

Question: Find the area of a rectangle with length equal to 7 cms and breadth equal to 4 cms.

( Answer: Length of the rectangle l = 7 cms

Breadth of the rectangle b = 4 cms

Area of the rectangle = 7 * 4

= 28 sq cms

Question: Find the area of a rectangle whose perimeter is equal to 12 cms and whose length is equal to twice its breadth.

( Answer: Perimeter of the circular base = 2 ( l + b ) = 12 cms

= 2 ( 2b + b ) = 12 cms (length is twice the breadth)

Breadth of the rectangle = 2 cms

Length of the rectangle = 4 cms

Area of the rectangle = 2 * 4

= 8 sq cms
